Myanmar – Cushioning beds shortage

Myanmar’s Ministry of Hotels and Tourism has announced the supply of 1,670 new hotel rooms over next year to help reduce the acute shortage of mid-range and high-end accommodation in the former capital Yangon.

The Ministry’s Directorate of Hotels and Tourism said the 270-room Centrepoint Towers Hotel in Yangon, and the 100-room Nawarat Hotel in Hlaing Township are among the new openings in 2013.

These will be backed by the opening of a Shangri-La Group 240-unit serviced apartment near Kandawgyi Lake, and 60 rooms in the Rose Garden Hotel Yangon.

To address the room shortage issue, the government has offered state buildings for tender for conversion into hotels, such as the Yangon Region Government office and the Myanmar Railway building. It is also intensifying the sale of land plots for hotel development to meet the rapidly changing landscape in the country’s business and tourism sector.
